Laser Marking Solutions for Histology Cassettes

Medical Labs - Histology Cassettes

High-density, durable marking of histology cassettes is a critical enabler of sample traceability and error reduction in pathology labs. This case focuses on solving three linked problems: reliably encoding large amounts of machine-readable data into the very small, chemically aggressive cassette face; doing it fast enough to match lab throughput; and doing it without consumables or process changes that risk contamination. The chosen solution combines a high peak-power YAG laser marking process (permanent, high-contrast marks at 600 dpi) with an integrated smart cassette printer workflow and LIS connectivity to deliver secure, scannable 2D codes of up to 100 characters every 3-5 seconds, without inks nor ribbons.

The Challenge

Pathology cassettes present a set of tightly-coupled constraints that make marking harder than many other medical substrates. In plain terms: very little printable area, aggressive chemical exposure, high throughput expectations and strict needs for traceability and safety.

  • Very limited, sometimes curved, marking surface on cassette faces, requires very high resolution and precise beam control to encode dense 2D barcodes and human-readable text.
  • Need to store long identifiers (up to ~100 characters) in a reliably scannable 2D code while preserving readability at small size.
  • Chemical and mechanical resistance: marks must survive exposure to xylene, alcohols, weak acids, formalin and repeated handling during tissue processing.
  • Throughput pressure: marking must not become a bottleneck, labs expect cassette output measured in single-digit seconds per unit.
  • Integration and traceability: markings must be produced in a secure, auditable way and easily linked to the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Avoiding consumables and contamination risk: adhesives, inks or labels are undesirable in a sterile workflow; consumable-free marking is preferred.
  • Safety and equipment compatibility: the method must comply with medical-lab safety norms and avoid thermal or structural damage to cassettes.

The Solution

A low-power YAG laser marking system coupled with a smart printing workflow addresses the constraints directly. The laser activates an incorporated marking compound on the cassette surface to create permanent, dark, high-contrast marks at up to 600 dpi, producing dense, durable 2D barcodes and readable text without any inks or labels. The whole system is designed for laboratory integration, speed and operator safety.

How the solution tackles the challenges:

  • High-resolution marking: 600 dpi laser output produces clear, dense 2D codes and crisp human-readable text even on small cassette faces.
  • Large data capacity: support for 2D barcodes that can carry up to 100 characters, enabling full sample identifiers and metadata on a single cassette face.
  • Chemical and abrasion resistance: marks created by the low-power YAG process are permanent and withstand common lab chemicals (xylene, alcohols, weak acids, formalin) and routine handling.
  • Throughput optimization: laser marking cycle of ~3-5 seconds per cassette plus an intelligent six-basket carousel for continuous feeding prevents bottlenecks in high-volume workflows.
  • LIS and workflow integration: PiSmart provides built-in software, simple touchscreen UI, parser-based LIS connectivity or image/label printing options, built-in scanners and user-login features for secure, auditable printing.
  • Consumable-free operation: no inks, ribbons, lamps or filters required, reduces running costs and contamination risk.
  • Safety and standards: designed to meet IEC/EN 61010-1:2010 and IEC 60825-1 requirements; low-power laser avoids need for additional filters and minimizes thermal impact on cassettes.
  • Familiarity and flexibility: same intuitive interface for thermal transfer and laser options lowers training time and eases deployment across lab stations.
